Workshop for Composers and Improvisers – this session is targeted to the University of Alberta’s Composer Societies and Improvisation groups in an exploration of composition and performance techniques with the members of New Sounds from Arab Lands. Non-University musicians who are interested in composition and improvisation are welcome.

Open Session for Community Performers – come join the ensemble of five international performers New Sounds from Arab Lands as we celebrate traditional, fusion, and contemporary music, including Jazz and Arab music. Bring your instrument and your voice!

Conference Workshops

Location: University of Alberta Fine Arts Building, Studio 2-27
Master Class with musicians from New Sounds from Arab Lands
This session targets performers trained in classical and jazz traditions on saxophone, violin, clarinet, and percussion. Focus is on individual instruments and on the bi-musicality of the New Sounds from Arab Lands ensemble. These members bring bi-musical training in both Arabic and Western Music from conservatories in Lebanon, Syria, and Tunisia, and training from Syria, Lebanon and from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Individual rooms are assigned to each instrument.

Public Music Workshop for Beginners and Music Lovers
This workshop is open to everyone and embraces a pluralist approach to making music. Bring instruments, sing, clap to the beat, dance, or just listen. Together we celebrate cosmopolitanism through sound – a mission shared across the Muslim world for centuries. The New Sounds from Arab Lands ensemble brings us all together and includes all musicians, scholars and community members.
